Soccer Teams Kick Off Fall Season

Mohawk Valley Community College opened up the 2012-13 Intercollegiate Athletic Season in a grand fashion this past weekend. Both the Men’s and Women’s Soccer Teams swept their weekend contests on the road:

The Women’s Soccer Team defeated Jamestown CC 4-1 on Saturday. Mia DeGironimo(New Hartford) and Meghan Carlo(Oriskany) scored two goals apiece. On Sunday the Hawks offense exploded for 9 goals against Jamestown-Cattaraugus in a 9-2 victory. Megan Gaffney(Sauquoit) poured in four goals to lead the Hawks. Next up for the MVCC Women is another road test against Tompkins Cortland on Wednesday, August 29th before their home opener on Sunday September 2nd against Niagara CC.

The Men’s Soccer Team began the 2012 season with plenty of new faces after losing the majority of their squad to graduation last year. The Hawks wasted little time in showing that they are still one of the strongest soccer programs in the Nation after winning the Finger Lakes CC Tournament. MVCC won both weekend games by scoring 2 goals in the last ten minutes. The Hawks defeated Division I Mercyhurst Northeast 4-2 and Nationally ranked #6 Howard CC 3-2. Jasmin Ramic(Utica) scored both late goals on headers off of corner kicks, the last coming with 20 seconds left in regulation. Next up for the Hawks is another weekend tournament on the road at Alfred on September 1st and 2nd.
