Choosing a Major
Major selection can be difficult at any age. Choosing a major becomes more arduous for those who have an unexpected major life change. There are tools and resources to assist students who are uncertain of their future career goals at MVCC. The Career and Transfer Office has a Career Counselor who can assist those with questions about career development and major selection.
Through this office, MVCC provides students with online tools to assist with the decision making process. FOCUS is a free online tool to students who would like to learn more about themselves and what might possibly be a fit for their next career choice. Understanding that assessments can be difficult to interpret, we recommend making an appointment to discuss the results of FOCUS with Adult Learner Services or the Career, Transfer and Job Placement Office.
Additionally, there are tools through the New York State Department of Labor that can assist students with career choices. Career Zone is a tool that has a myriad of information about careers, salaries, and job outlook for specific New York State regions. Career Zone also has an assessment tool based on a student’s interest. After completing the assessment a list of specific occupations will be given to the student for consideration.
