MVCC offers interesting February Break programs for kids & teens
The warm weather is right around the corner, and soon kids will be out of school for the February break. Mohawk Valley Community College’s Center for Corporate and Community Education will keep them busy with a series of classes and programs designed to be informative, fun and interesting for kids and teenagers. These programs include:
Cracking the Communication Code
How do you communicate today? Probably by texting, instant messaging, and emailing your friends. Ever wonder what people did 100 years ago? In this class, you will learn about the history of telecommunications and discover the importance coding and decoding communications had on our current technology. Activities include designing your own code, building a working telegraph key, and sending and receiving electronic messages. Ages 11-14. The session is February 21-24, 9 a.m. - noon at Perry Jr. High in New Hartford. Registration cost is $79.
A Taste of Chinese
Have you ever wanted to open your eyes to a different language and culture? This four-day camp is your chance to get a taste of Mandarin Chinese. You will learn the basics of vocabulary, grammar, literacy, and conversation as well as the cultural background of this ancient society. Ages 8-12. The session is February 21-24, 9 a.m. - noon at Perry Jr. High in New Hartford. Registration cost is $69.
Hip Hop Dance Camp
Ready to bust-a-move? Learn some cool hip hop dances to show off to your friends, including breakdancing, popping, locking, krumping, and video choreography. You will gain confidence, self-esteem, and a greater awareness of your body as you practice and prepare for a performance at the end of camp. No past dance experience necessary. All are welcome to join. Ages 9-14. The session is February 20-24, 9 a.m. - noon on the Utica campus. Registration cost is $79.
American Red Cross Babysitting
Here’s all the basic information and skills training you will need to care for children of all ages in a safe, reliable manner. You will learn the difference between a mother’s helper and a babysitter; how to feed infants and children; and emergency identification. With successful completion, you will receive certification in basic first aid, American Red Cross babysitting training, and infant and child CPR. After you complete this course, you will be able to assure parents that you are a capable and competent babysitter . The session is February 20-24, 9 a.m. - noon or 1-4 p.m. on the Utica campus. Registration cost for either session is $85.
Enrollment is limited and will be taken on a first come basis. For information or to register, call 792-5300 or visit www.mvcc.edu/cced. Office hours are 8:30 a.m.-7:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Friday. All MVCC non-credit instruction is completely self-supporting, including indirect costs, and requires no public funding.
